Required Reading 3: How Useful is a Use Case?

A use case can be formally defined as a list of steps defining interactions between a role and a system, to achieve a goal. However, if you haven’t written one yourself, you have at least heard the term somewhere. But exactly how useful are they when developing a product or defining a system process?  Without having the proper understanding of use cases and the purpose of writing one, writing an effective case to elicit functional requirements can be pretty…useless.

Use cases can mainly be viewed as writing a story, so there is no real standardized format for writing them, making it...

Best Practices for your Splunk Deployment: Indexer Performance

Function1 is a Professional Services Partner to Splunk.  We have gathered a wealth of experience in conducting dozens of consulting engagements in conjunction with Splunk PS, and now we want to share some of our Best Practices with you. The most common growth of a Splunk deployment starts from a utility used by your Systems Administrator to find that needle in the haystack issue,  and grows to an enterprise scale reporting tool used by the leaders of your organization.  Splunk as an enterprise platform is typically situated in a very prominent place in the decision-making process of your...

Required Reading 2: Change Management and You

Change is never easy, but acclimating to change that you are unprepared for, is even harder.  In the IT world, a standardized change management process ensures that there is minimal impact due to any changes that are imposed.  It is especially important to have the proper change management process in place because changes can affect anything from multiple users, disrupt key business activities, involve modifications to the infrastructure, or involve process modifications. It also facilitates efficient and prompt handling of all changes maintaining balance between the need for change and...

Required Reading: The Basics

Without requirements, there are no defined statements as to which the project outcome should conform to. Each requirement should be documented, actionable, measureable, testable, and should define a business need or opportunity. This is important to a successful and timely delivery of systems, but when applied correctly, it can be used in all facets of decision making.

Known limitations with the Web Center Interaction

Hey all!

Over the last few months, I've had 2 customers run into 2 separate limitations with the Oracle Web Center Interaction(WCI) product, namely in version 6.1 MP1.  The first of the two cases I had run into previously, so that prompted the idea for this post to share and build a running list of these limitations.  The second of the 2 cases led me to dig deeper to find the reason for these constraints.  What are these limitations you ask?

Well for example, if you're working with ALUI 6.1MP1, did you know that the maximum number of pages created within a community...

PTSpy log messages linked to ... hair loss?

For the past few years, researchers have been perplexed about the causes behind the increased rate of hair loss in ALUI portal administrators. So, a team from Function1 took on the task of tracking these subjects for a few months and recorded the findings. One of the interesting things discovered was that the cause was not genetic or gender-specific in most cases. It was actually the simple explanation of the subjects repeatedly pulling on their hair while investigating problems with the portal.
